Publisher: in-D | Number Of Pages: 300 | Publication Date: 2003-10 | ISBN:1893801187 | CD-ROM | 638Mb | 50Mb×9+8Mb

Zaha Hadid is one of the leading architects of our time. True to her provocative architectural research, her recently built works realize challenging and innovative designs once thought unbuildable. Moreover, a look at her pending projects promise even more dramatic shifts in our understanding and experience of architecture. Built works include: Contemporary Arts Center, Bergisel Ski Jump, Car Park & Terminus Hoenheim-Nord. Projects include: Phaeno- Science Center Wolfsburg, MAXXI- Museum of Arts of the 21st Century, BMW Plant- Central Building, One-North- Vista Masterplan Price Tower Arts Center.
Features: Video Interviews [60 min] VR Panoramic Views [11] Paintings [12] Photographs [70] Models [73] Drawings [70] Computer Renderings [90] Computer Animations [13] The PlanetArchitecture.com Series of e-archives provide virtual tours which transcend the capabilities of traditional media. Utilizing an intuitive multi-referenced interface, e-archives allow users self-directed experiences through a comprehensive collection of videos, photographs, VR panoramic views, drawings, and renderings. Am I ready for digital books? I was excited about this new media format thinking I could use images for a screen saver or look at more detail, zoom in; but i was a bit diasppointed. This is better than the Morphosis one I also bought at the same time but many of the images are of limited size and i was hoping they could be viewed on a large format flat screen. Navigation takes a bit of getting used to. I still have a hard time reading content for long periods on the screen. For the price i think this should have been edited as a DVD video/documentray interview for viewing on a TV. It seems this format is stuck between CD and DVD, not a very satisfying experience. I think it should play itself with a commentary than having the user click through the various obscure tabs. There are alot of drawings and renderings that may not be available elseware; Hadid's work is hard to picture, visiting the real building is still the only way to really understand them. Planet Architecture has the best information on some of the most influential architects today and the past. And whats great is that its all grouped in ONE CD, not in a bunch of separate books. Whether you are a student doing a project or an architecture enthusiast these cds are great buys. The cd is easy to navigate and graphically interesting. I suggest you buy one for yourself and a friend.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Rh Value Publishing “Frank Lloyd Wright "
Gramercy (August 17, 1999) | ISBN: 051716115X | 80 pages | Djvu | 9,8 Mb

The importance of the architect to the quality and character of any society is not usually as widely regarded as it deserves to be. While every past civilization is, to a considerable extent, recognized and judged by its architecture, its creators are in general little known or revered; it would seem as though the buildings which are of such importance to our lives have spontaneously appeared as if by magic. Civilizations are more widely evaluated by their literature, music, painting and sculpture and other useful artefacts, while architecture is merely taken for granted.
In this century, however, where great and far-reaching developments have occurred which require examination and justification, architects have come to be regarded with a mixture of interest, suspicion and sometimes dismay. All this has served to transform the interest of the general public in architecture and the architect is beginning to be appreciated and valued.
When they have great strength of character, lucidity of exposition and, in the view of the media, an interesting personal history as well, they have become publicly recognized figures of social importance. None more so than the subject of this book whose personality and achievement has, unlike many of his peers, dominated the first half of this century. With such figures as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, he is recognized as a creative architectural genius. His singular individual achievement, as a native-born American, was to gather together the strands of American historical architecture and create a corpus of work which is both modern and essentially American.
Frank Lloyd Wright's career, sometimes tragic, sometimes tempestuous—at all times creative—has been examined and re-examined in numerous studies and articles both during his lifetime and since his death in 1959 shortly before his most famous and notorious Guggenheim Museum in New York was completed. And his life continues to demand re-examination as the progress of architectural philosophy inspires dramatic stylistic change. This concise consideration of his life and work offers a careful analysis of this complex, powerful and confident personality as well as the architectural legacy left behind by him.

Charles Nelson, "Managing Quality in Architecture
Architectural Press; 1 edition (July 13, 2006) | ISBN: 0750668180 | 320 pages | PDF | 6,6 Mb

This handbook addresses the question of how best to manage quality in architecture for the mutual benefit of design practices and their clients. Based on research from the last two decades, it explores the general principles, tools and techniques that can be adapted to the unique culture of any design practice.

The book addresses all aspects of quality in creating the built environment, with international contributions representing some of the best thinking that exists in design practice management. It is aimed at the entire design team those who have a role in design inputs, design processes and design execution; including project managers, contractors, suppliers and clients. An accompanying website also provides commentary and updates on the text.

Topics are linked to relevant sections of the current quality standard, and the standard is interpreted as to its application to design practice. Practices interested in establishing an ISO 9001-compliant quality system will find all the tools they need.

The interpretation of quality is comprehensive. The focus is completely practical, rather than theoretical, affording readers a concise picture of how the issues of excellence and quality performance flow across every aspect of design practice. This focus provides the vital link that distinguishes truly successful practices from the rest, Here, simply, is the answer to the forces of commoditization that challenge all designers in today's competitive environment.

The text is augmented and supported by chapters from twenty-two authoritative contributors, a foreword authored by Eugene Hopkins, and illustrations by graphic artist Michael Lindell.

Architectural Press; 2 edition (May 2, 2005) | ISBN:0750665440 | 192 pages | PDF | 5,9 Mb

Review
A book that is essential reading, especially as it considers the 'why' as well as the 'what' of sustainable architecture.
Lord Rogers of Riverside

With ecological sustainability now on the curriculum for all the RIBA recognized courses in architecture this book could become essential reading for students. It would also be very attractive to practitioners who seek a useful, easily digestible, "handbook" to this field.
Paul Hyett, RIBA President

'A book from an authority such as Peter Smith is welcome and deserves to be read for the amount of information packed into its 200 pages.'
The Architectural Review

'This book is really two publications in one. It contains both a well-researched and dispassionate overview of energy and climate, combined with a thorough account of acheiving energy efficiency in buildings. It is also incredibly up to date...If budgets only extend to one book then this book is it.'

Mike Jenks, Nicola Dempsey, "Future Forms and Design for Sustainable Cities"
Architectural Press (August 22, 2005) | ISBN:075066309X | 456 pages | PDF | 13,2 Mb

Concentrating on the planning and design of cities, the three sections take a logical route through the discussion from the broad considerations at regional and city scale, to the larger city at high and lower densities through to design considerations on the smaller block scale. Key design issues such as access to facilities, access for sunlight, life cycle analyses, and the impact of communications on urban design are tackled, and in conclusion, the research is compared to large scale design examples that have been proposed and/or implemented over the past decade to give a vision for the future that might be achievable.

* Provides an accessible presentation of the latest research in sustainable urban planning and design
* Illustrates recent sustainable plans and schemes to show how they stand up against the latest research
* Offers architects, urban designers and planners a view of how urban forms can become more sustainable in the future

Thomas P. Ryan, "Modern Engineering Statistics"
Wiley-Interscience (September 28, 2007) | ISBN: 0470081872 | 608 pages | PDF | 3 Mb

An introductory perspective on statistical applications in the field of engineering

Modern Engineering Statistics presents state-of-the-art statistical methodology germane to engineering applications. With a nice blend of methodology and applications, this book provides and carefully explains the concepts necessary for students to fully grasp and appreciate contemporary statistical techniques in the context of engineering.
With almost thirty years of teaching experience, many of which were spent teaching engineering statistics courses, the author has successfully developed a book that displays modern statistical techniques and provides effective tools for student use. This book features:

Examples demonstrating the use of statistical thinking and methodology for practicing engineers
A large number of chapter exercises that provide the opportunity for readers to solve engineering-related problems, often using real data sets
Clear illustrations of the relationship between hypothesis tests and confidence intervals
Extensive use of Minitab® and JMP® to illustrate statistical analyses

The book is written in an engaging style that interconnects and builds on discussions, examples, and methods as readers progress from chapter to chapter. The assumptions on which the methodology is based are stated and tested in applications. Each chapter concludes with a summary highlighting the key points that are needed in order to advance in the text, as well as a list of references for further reading. Certain chapters that contain more than a few methods also provide end-of-chapter guidelines on the proper selection and use of those methods. Bridging the gap between statistics education and real-world applications, Modern Engineering Statistics is ideal for either a one- or two-semester course in engineering statistics.

Making Sense of Children's Drawings
Open University Press | ISBN:0335212654 | Edition 2004-08 | PDF | 152 pages | 33.21 MB

"If you know and love young children, find a way to read this book. Here you will discover the hidden talents of young children for complexity, design, and tenacity for learning... a wonderful addition to the too-small library of quality books on young children's learning through art." Shirley Brice Heath, Professor Emerita, Stanford University and Professor at Large, Brown University, USA

"This book is unique in giving an in-depth account of the way young children approach drawing at home and at school. It shows the cognitive value of drawing in children’s intellectual and emotional development and sets out the truly extraordinary range of drawing types that are used and understood by three to six year olds…. It is an invaluable experience."
Professor Ken Baynes, Department of Design and Technology, Loughborough University, UK

This book explores how young children learn to draw and draw to learn, at home and school. It provides support for practitioners in developing a pedagogy of drawing in Art and Design and across the curriculum and provide advice for parents about how to make sense of their children’s drawings.

Making Sense of Children’s Drawings is enlivened with the real drawings of seven young children, collected over three years. These drawings stimulated dialogues with the children, parents and practitioners whose voices are reported in the book. The book makes a powerful argument for us to radically re-think the role of drawing in young children’s construction of meaning, communication and sense of identity. It provides insights into the influence of media and consumerism, as reflected in popular visual imagery, and on gender identity formation in young children. It also offers strong messages about the overemphasis on the three Rs in early childhood education.

Key reading for students, practitioners and parents who want to encourage young children’s drawing development without ‘interfering’ with their creativity, and who need a novel approach to tuning into young children’s passions and pre-occupations.

Pieter E. Vermaas, Peter Kroes, Andrew Light, Steven A. Moore "Philosophy and Design: From Engineering to Architecture "
Springer | 2007-11-29 | ISBN:1402065906 | 362 pages | PDF | 1,2 Mb

This volume provides the reader with an integrated overview of state-of-the-art research in philosophy and ethics of design in engineering and architecture. It contains twenty-five essays that focus on engineering designing in its traditional sense, on designing in novel engineering domains, including ICT, genetics, and nanotechnology, designing of socio-technical systems, and on architectural and environmental designing. These essays are preceded by an introductory text structuring the field of philosophy and ethics of design in engineering and architecture as one in which a series of similar philosophical, societal and ethical questions are asked. This volume enables the reader to overcome the traditional separation between engineering designing and architectural designing. The emerging discipline of designing socio-technical systems is shown to form an intermediate between engineering and architecture to which the philosophical and ethical analyses of both domains apply. This volume thus announces a challenging cross-fertilization between the philosophy and ethics of engineering and of architecture that will lay down the integrated ground works for the renewed interests in the importance of design in modern society.

Architectural Record November 2007
PDF | English | 258 pages | 41.5 MB

Architectural Record is an American monthly magazine dedicated to architecture and interior design, published by McGraw-Hill Construction in New York City. It is over 110 years old. While the magazine is aimed at professional architects and engineers with news, commentary, criticism and continuing education sections, it features numerous articles exploring cutting edge designs by leading architects with glossy photos and articles that are accessible to non-experts. The magazine holds a close relationship with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), notably through AIA Continuing Education sections offered in the magazine and on its website.

In May 1910 the Architectural Record published an important painting of Pablo Picasso's, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, in Gelett Burgess's article "The Wild Men of Paris". This article was one the first mentions of the co-founders of cubism, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, to appear in the American press.
